Partnership with Nottingham’s First Female African Lord Mayor
We are proud to announce that Nottingham Central Women’s Aid (NCWA) has been selected as the Lord Mayor of Nottingham’s Charity of the Year for 2025–2026.
This announcement comes during a landmark moment in our city’s history. On 12 May 2025, Councillor Patience Uloma Ifediora was officially sworn in as Nottingham’s first-ever Female African Lord Mayor.
A passionate advocate for equality and inclusion, Cllr Ifediora has long been a trailblazer in Nottingham. She became the city’s first African woman councillor in 2015, served as Sheriff in 2019, and now makes history once again in her new civic role.
A Shared Mission to Support Survivors of Domestic Abuse
As Lord Mayor, Cllr Ifediora brings her lived experience of breaking barriers and strengthening communities—values that align directly with our mission. For over 45 years, Nottingham Central Women’s Aid has supported women and children escaping domestic abuse. We offer refuge, emotional support, recovery programmes, and advocacy across Nottingham and beyond.
Our selection as the Lord Mayor’s Charity 2025–2026 is both an honour and an opportunity:
✅ To raise awareness about domestic abuse and gender-based violence
✅ To highlight the voices and needs of survivors
✅ To raise vital funds for life-saving, trauma-informed services
✅ To work alongside the Lord Mayor to build a safer, more inclusive Nottingham
